Crowns
What is a Crown?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that is placed over a tooth to restore its shape & size, strength and improve its appearance. The crown, when cemented into place, fully encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.
There are many reasons why a crown is recommended, with the most common reason being to reinforce the tooth’s strength and function. If you have a severely worn down, cracked or broken tooth then a crown might be the ideal option. They are also used to to cover a tooth that has been root canal treated for protection of the teeth.
There are various types of crowns, and the one that is right for you will be discussed with your dentist at your consultation appointment.

+ What are the Benefits?

- Improve the appearance of a tooth by changing its shape or color
- Cover a Dental implant or provide an anchor for a bridge
+ What are the disadvantages?
- Can cut down tooth structure which is quite extensive possibly making a healthy tooth more sensitive
- More expensive than having a simple filling
+ What is the Process?
Following a consultation to discuss the right treatment plan for you, our dentist will administer anaesthetic to numb the local area. The dentist will then file down the outside of the tooth leaving enough structure to place the crown on top. An electronical scan will be taken of the tooth and sent directly to a labratory for a ceramist to begin making the crown. Sometimes the dentist may take some silicone impressions of the tooth to send to the lab also.
Once the crown has been made, which usually takes around 7-10 days, We will make sure it is comfortable, functional and you are happy with the appearance of the crown before using a strong cement to secure the crown in place.
